Before You Buy

Platforms, editions, prices, Game Pass and subscriptions — what you need to own before launch day.

What platforms is MW4 on — and will it work on PS4 or Xbox One?Verified

MW4 launches on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC and Nintendo Switch 2 — there are no PS4 or Xbox One versions. On PC you can buy it on Battle.net, Steam or the Xbox app, and the Xbox Series X|S and Xbox on PC versions are Xbox Play Anywhere, so one purchase covers both console and Windows. The Switch 2 version is built natively by Digital Legends. If you only own a last-gen console, you need a current-gen console or a PC to play.

Is MW4 multiplayer free to play?Verified

No. Modern Warfare 4 is a paid game — $69.99 for the Standard Edition and $99.99 for the Vault Edition (US pricing) — and multiplayer is part of the full game. There is no free-to-play MW4 multiplayer. On top of the game, console players need an active online subscription (PS Plus on PS5, Game Pass Essential or higher on Xbox, Nintendo Switch Online on Switch 2); PC has no subscription requirement.

What's the difference between the Standard and Vault Editions?Verified

Standard ($69.99) is the full game plus the digital preorder bonuses: campaign early access from October 16, DMZ early access from October 20, the Hunter Killer operator skin, the Gilded Pearl camo pack and the Inner Circuit M4 blueprint. Vault ($99.99, digital-only) adds the Hostile Alliance Operator Pack (Price, Valeria, Ghost and Blix skins), the Special Forces Operator Pack (four nation-themed operators with localized voice packs), the Signature Weapon Collection (five blueprints: Kastov 762, ISO Nightshade, Rezi 12, Oris 8.6 and a combat knife), one season of BlackCell (Battle Pass, 1,100 CP, 20 tier skips, an exclusive operator and blueprint) and a DMZ Deployment Bonus. A digital Standard copy can upgrade to Vault for $30 later; physical editions cannot be upgraded. Some outlets reported a pricier "Pro" tier, but it is not on Activision's official editions page as of October 21, 2026 — treat it as unconfirmed.

Can I get a discount on MW4?Verified

Yes — a 10% loyalty discount applies to the digital Vault Edition when you preorder or prepurchase on a platform account that owns and has played a qualifying Call of Duty title (Modern Warfare 2019 or newer, excluding free-to-play and mobile), or through an active Game Pass Ultimate/Premium/PC subscription that has played one. The discount is applied automatically at checkout on official stores, runs until launch, and never applies to Vault upgrades.

Is MW4 on Game Pass?Verified

No. Xbox's official page states that "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 is not eligible for Xbox Game Pass" — to play you must buy the Standard or Vault Edition. Game Pass still matters in two ways: an active subscription (Essential tier or higher) is what covers Xbox online multiplayer, and Game Pass Ultimate/Premium/PC members who have played a qualifying CoD title qualify for the 10% Vault loyalty discount.

Do I need PS Plus, Game Pass or Nintendo Switch Online to play online?Verified

Yes on consoles. Activision's editions page states that a PlayStation Plus, Game Pass (Essential) or Nintendo Switch Online subscription "is required to access social features and online modes" on PS5, Xbox Series X|S and Switch 2 respectively — buying the game alone is not enough for console multiplayer. On PC (Battle.net, Steam or the Xbox app) no subscription is required. The subscription is a separate recurring purchase from the game itself.

What do MW4 preorders include?Verified

Every digital edition includes: Campaign Early Access starting October 16 (PT), DMZ Early Access starting October 20 (PT), the Hunter Killer operator skin (usable now in Black Ops 7 and Warzone, in MW4 at launch), the Gilded Pearl weapon camo pack, and the Inner Circuit M4 weapon blueprint delivered at MW4 launch. If your Activision account is also linked to Call of Duty: Mobile, you additionally get the Shattered Relay blueprint there after logging into MW4 by November 15. Physical editions include the base game; Activision lists preorder bonuses for digital editions, so early access on a physical copy is not confirmed.

Release & Unlock Times

When multiplayer goes live, what early access covers, and what to do if the game stays locked.

When does MW4 multiplayer come out?Verified

Multiplayer goes live with the full game on Friday, October 23, 2026 — the official worldwide launch date on PS5, Xbox Series X|S, PC (Battle.net, Steam and the Xbox app) and Switch 2. PC stores list the game as available from October 22, 2026, so PC unlocks can begin the evening of October 22 in US time zones. Multiplayer was never part of early access: the early window covers the campaign (from October 16) and DMZ (from October 20), and ends when the full game launches.

What time does MW4 unlock in my region?Reported

Only the date is officially confirmed: October 23, 2026 worldwide, with PC listings showing October 22 in some regions. The per-region clock times that circulated before launch — console stores unlocking at midnight local time rolling westward from New Zealand, and PC joining the same midnight-local roll for the first time (in US terms, 9PM PT October 22 / midnight ET October 23) — come from media reports whose pages are no longer available, and Activision has not published an official timezone table we can verify. Your platform's store page is the authoritative countdown: Steam shows one for pre-purchases. See the release times page for the confirmed-versus-reported breakdown.

It's past launch time and multiplayer is still locked — what do I do?Partly verified

Rule out a platform-wide cause first, then try local fixes in this order: 1) check the official server status page and @CODUpdates — if unlock is delayed or servers are degraded, nothing on your end fixes it; 2) install any pending game update — a day-one patch is required for multiplayer; 3) fully restart the game (on console, restart the store app too); 4) confirm your copy matches your account region and your online subscription (PS Plus / Game Pass / Switch Online) is active; 5) restore licenses (PS5: Settings → Users and Accounts → Other → Restore Licenses) or check Xbox "Ready to install". If the tile is still locked after that, contact Activision Support or your platform support.

Can I play MW4 early?Verified

Yes, if you preordered a digital edition — but not multiplayer. Campaign Early Access began Friday, October 16 (PT), and DMZ Early Access opened Tuesday, October 20 (PT), for anyone who preordered or prepurchased any digital edition on any platform. Multiplayer is not part of early access: it unlocks with the full game on October 23. Media reports say campaign completion rewards (operator cosmetics and XP tokens) become usable in multiplayer at launch.

Install & PC Setup

Download sizes, preloading, slim installs, PC specs and choosing a store.

How big is the MW4 download and how much space do I need?Partly verified

Official PC requirements list 115 GB on an SSD at launch, and an SSD is mandatory. Pre-launch reporting put real-world sizes higher — around 124 GB on PC split into packs (campaign ~42 GB, multiplayer ~21 GB, DMZ packs), roughly 117 GB on PS5 (app ~29 GB, campaign ~42 GB, multiplayer ~21 GB, shared ~20 GB, DMZ ~6 GB) or around 160 GB with the optional ~42 GB Warzone pack, Xbox Series X ~115 GB and Switch 2 ~77–85 GB — plus Battle.net players told to expect an extra ~60 GB Call of Duty HQ update. These per-platform numbers are reported, not confirmed by Activision; plan for 130–180 GB free on PC to be safe.

Sources (2026-10-21): Steam — MW4 store listing (checked Oct 21, 2026)

Can I preload MW4 before launch?Reported

Yes — media reported preload went live October 14 across platforms, so on launch week the download should already be waiting in your library. During setup you can pick which content packs to install (campaign-only is possible; add DMZ or the Warzone pack later). Activision hasn't published its own preload page, so treat the exact per-platform start times as reported; practically, open your library or store page and look for the install button — pre-purchased PC copies appear in your Battle.net or Steam library ahead of unlock.

Sources (2026-10-21): Steam — MW4 store listing (checked Oct 21, 2026)

Can I install only multiplayer and skip the campaign to save space?Partly verified

MW4 ships content as separate packs, so you should not need every component installed: pre-launch coverage describes PC packs for Campaign (~42 GB), Multiplayer (~21 GB) and DMZ, and recent Call of Duty titles let you add or remove packs via your platform's "Manage game / Storage" screen. The exact MW4 pack menus are not officially documented as of October 21, 2026, so check that screen after installing. One caveat: texture streaming means an internet connection is required even for multiplayer private matches, so a slim install does not enable offline play.

Can my PC run MW4?Verified

Compare against the officially listed Steam requirements. Minimum: Windows 10 64-bit, Core i5-6600 or Ryzen 5 1400, 8 GB RAM, GTX 1060 (or 970) / RX 470 / Arc A580, 115 GB SSD. Recommended: Windows 11, i7-8700K or Ryzen 5 3600, 16 GB RAM, RTX 3060 / RX 6600 XT / Arc B580, 115 GB SSD. TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot are required on PC, and an SSD is mandatory. Higher "competitive" and "4K" spec tiers circulated in press coverage are not on the official store listing — treat them as unconfirmed. The full tier table is on our system requirements page.

Should I buy MW4 on Battle.net, Steam or the Xbox app?Partly verified

All three sell the game on PC, and they are separate stores with separate installs and libraries — pick the one where your friends and existing CoD library live; there is no gameplay advantage. Two verified differences: the Steam listing carries an official "Cross-Platform Multiplayer" tag (crossplay runs through Activision accounts), and buying on the Xbox Series X|S or Xbox on PC store gives you Xbox Play Anywhere — one purchase unlocks both the console and Windows versions.

Accounts, Crossplay & Friends

Activision accounts, crossplay and matchmaking (SBMM), playing with friends across platforms, split-screen and what can and cannot be turned off.

Do I need an Activision account to play MW4?Verified

Yes, for online play: Activision states MW4 "requires all players to log in to an Activision account when playing online" — you'll be prompted to sign up or log in at first launch. Your Activision ID (DisplayName#1234567) is what friends use to find you across platforms, and a linked mobile phone number may be required. Note that accounts permanently banned from recent Call of Duty titles may be blocked from playing MW4 online, and Blizzard store bans prevent buying it there.

Does MW4 have crossplay between PlayStation, Xbox, PC and Switch 2?Partly verified

Yes — the PC store listing carries an official "Cross-Platform Multiplayer" tag, and MW4 is built on Activision accounts, which is the system that connects players across PS5, Xbox, Switch 2 and PC. What is not verifiable yet are the fine print details (whether the default is on, who can toggle it off, and how input-based matchmaking pools players): the detailed statement media cited before launch is no longer available, and Activision's own pages do not cover it. Check the in-game settings once you're in, and expect the picture to firm up in launch-week patch notes.

Can you turn off crossplay in MW4?Reported

Not confirmed for MW4 yet. Launch-window media guides said console players could disable crossplay (PS5: Settings → Network; Xbox: Settings → General → Online Safety — system-level, not in-game) while PC players had no option, and that matches every recent Call of Duty: from Modern Warfare 2 (2022) through MW3 (2023) the toggle was console-only and never existed on PC (PC Gamer, Eurogamer and esports.gg coverage of those titles). Treat "console can, PC can't" as the strong expectation, then verify in your in-game and platform settings after launch — restricting your matchmaking pool usually means longer queue times.

Is there SBMM (skill-based matchmaking) in MW4?Reported

Yes — and MW4 runs two systems side by side, per launch-window media coverage: the default "classic" skill-weighted matchmaking (the system introduced to Black Ops 7 in Season 5) plus separate "Open Matchmaking" playlists that apply only "minimal skill consideration" for looser, more varied lobbies. There is no on/off SBMM toggle — if you want softer games, queue the Open Matchmaking playlists. Whether Open Matchmaking stays after the beta window is not confirmed. Details are media-reported (corroborated by PCGamesN, GameSpot and Dexerto coverage), not on official pages we can open.

Does MW4 have cross-progression and shared inventory between platforms?Verified

Yes — officially confirmed. Activision's account-registration page states that "Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 game progression is stored on your Activision account", so you "have the freedom to continue your online progression" on any platform linked to that account. Two warnings from the same page: use the same Activision account you used in the beta, or you lose that account's beta bonus content — and your progress will not carry over if you link your PlayStation/Xbox/Battle.net/Steam/Nintendo accounts to a different Activision account. Link every platform you play on to one account and your level, unlocks and purchases follow you.

Source (2026-10-21): Activision Support — MW4 In-Game Account Registration (checked Oct 21, 2026)

How do I add friends and form a cross-platform party?Partly verified

Through Activision accounts — officially, "Activision accounts allow you to play online with friends and other players on all platforms." Link your platform account to your Activision ID, then add friends by their Activision ID (DisplayName#1234567) from the in-game Social menu — the friends list lives on the account, not the console, so it works across platforms. From the Social menu you can invite friends into a party before matchmaking. If requests fail, have both players verify their platform links on Activision Support.

Does MW4 have split-screen, private matches or offline bots?Verified

Split-screen: yes, on PS5 and Xbox Series X|S only — Activision's editions page confirms split-screen multiplayer (two players on one screen) for those platforms; it is not listed for PC or Switch 2. Private matches exist, but there is no offline play: texture streaming requires a continuous internet connection even for private matches. Offline bot matches are not part of any confirmed MW4 feature list.

Troubleshooting

How do I check if MW4 servers are down?Verified

Use Activision's official Online Services page (support.activision.com/onlineservices), which lists MW4 and shows live outage events; follow @CODUpdates on X for real-time outage and playlist notices; and use Activision Support for account-specific problems. Community trackers such as r/modernwarfare4 are handy for "is it just me" checks but are not official. Launch windows routinely bring queues and login hiccups without a true outage — retry for a few minutes before assuming the worst.

MW4 says "unable to connect" or matchmaking never finds a match — how do I fix it?Partly verified

First separate server-side from local: check the official server status page and @CODUpdates — if others are affected, waiting is the fix. Then try local checks, lowest risk first: 1) fully restart the game; 2) run your platform's network test (PS5, Xbox and Switch all have one in settings) and confirm other online games work; 3) reboot your router/modem, or switch from Wi-Fi to wired; 4) if the test shows strict or moderate NAT, parties and matchmaking can fail — enable UPnP on your router or follow your platform's guide to open NAT. Activision has not published MW4-specific error-code fixes as of October 21, 2026; a specific code is worth searching on Activision Support before anything more drastic.

I bought MW4 but the store still says "Buy" or my edition content is missing — what now?Partly verified

Work through these in order: 1) confirm you are signed in with the account that made the purchase, on the same platform store; 2) check the transaction actually completed in your platform's purchase history; 3) fully restart the console or launcher; 4) install all pending updates — missing content packs after a big patch are usually just queued downloads (check "Manage game content" or your platform's equivalent); 5) on PS5 use Restore Licenses (Settings → Users and Accounts → Other), on Xbox check My games & apps → Ready to install, on PC use Battle.net's "Scan and Repair" or Steam's "Verify integrity of game files". If edition content is still missing, contact Activision Support with your receipt — entitlement fixes are handled there.

MW4 crashes, stutters or runs at low FPS — what are the basic fixes?Partly verified

Start low-risk and escalate: 1) update the game and your GPU drivers (NVIDIA/AMD/Intel apps do this automatically); 2) confirm your PC meets the minimum specs — including the mandatory SSD, TPM 2.0 and Secure Boot; 3) close heavy background apps, overlays and capture software; 4) repair game files (Steam: Properties → Installed Files → Verify integrity; Battle.net: gear icon → Scan and Repair); 5) on consoles, restart the console and free up storage if it is nearly full. For frame rate, enable upscaling (DLSS/FSR) or cap FPS before lowering resolution. If a specific error code or crash pattern shows up, search it on Activision Support — codes are usually documented with official fixes.

Does MW4 have Ranked Play at launch?Reported

Ranked Play is not part of the official launch content list. How many maps does MW4 multiplayer have at launch?Verified

Twelve core 6v6 maps are officially confirmed for launch — Cachette, Coal, Lithium, Lotus, Mumbai, Munition, Nautical, Reactor U92, Rooftops, Sentry, Silkworm and Transit 213 — plus the modular Kill Block arena for Gunfight, which reconfigures between matches with 500+ possible layouts. For Ground War, Imjin Farmland and Wolves Stadium were shown officially (in the beta); a third reported map, Arsenal, is unconfirmed, so a total launch count has never been officially stated. Two more additions are still pending confirmation on pages we can open: media report Mumbai as a MW3 (2023)-inspired map, and the classic Shipment map is reported to arrive October 27, 2026, shortly after launch.

How many weapons are in MW4 at launch, and how do I unlock them?Verified

33: officially counted as 24 primaries (8 assault rifles, 5 SMGs, 2 shotguns, 3 LMGs, 3 marksman rifles, 3 snipers), 8 secondaries (4 handguns, 4 launchers) and 1 melee weapon. Most weapons unlock at Player Level 4 when Create-a-Class opens, with the rest arriving at level milestones up to 55 — for example the X-58 Nyx SMG at level 46. Owning a weapon blueprint (from the store or a Battle Pass) permanently unlocks that weapon's base version for your whole leveling journey.

How do attachments unlock — once per weapon or shared?Verified

Shared. Each attachment unlocks once, and from then on it is available on every weapon that can use it — there is no per-weapon attachment grind. On top of standard attachments, most weapons have an Apex Attachment: a transformative part (alternate fire modes, integrated gear) unlocked by fully leveling that specific weapon, which does not consume a normal attachment slot. The built-in Gunny tool suggests complete builds from whatever you have already unlocked.

When does Create-a-Class unlock, and what do new players use before that?Verified

Create-a-Class opens at Player Level 4. Until then you deploy with premade Default Loadouts — you are never without a working class. A MW4 class holds a primary weapon, a secondary, a Pick-3 perk selection from 18 perks, tactical/lethal equipment and field upgrades, and — new for MW4 — its own operator and killstreak package. The Overkill perk swaps your secondary for a second primary.

Source (2026-10-21): Call of Duty blog — launch loadouts (checked Oct 21, 2026)

How do killstreaks progress — kills only, or objective play too?Verified

Both. MW4's "Smartstreaks" system keeps kills the primary driver, but objective play (captures, defends and similar actions) also builds streak progress — there is no classic points-based scorestreak menu. There are 17 killstreaks at launch across 4/6/8/10/12-kill tiers: UAV, Care Package, Bomb Glider and Impact Warhead at 4 kills, up to Gunship and Air Lockdown at 12. Each loadout class carries its own streak package. Two perks interact with streaks: Hardline (Level 4) reduces a streak's cost by 1, and Kill Chain (Level 48) makes kills made by your killstreaks award half progress. Coming from the beta? It ran a smaller 10-streak, elimination-only setup (3/5/7/9/11) — launch replaced it with the tiers above. The Tactical Nuke was confirmed in the beta at a 30-elimination streak (own-gun kills only); whether it returns at launch is still unconfirmed.

Does Prestige reset my unlocks in MW4?Verified

It is your choice. After Level 55, each Prestige level lets you pick a path: Regular Prestige restarts you at Level 1 but keeps every unlock and Create-a-Class item, while Classic Prestige does reset level unlocks and Create-a-Class progress — in exchange for a 20% XP boost, one Permanent Unlock Token and bonus cosmetics. There are 10 Prestige levels, then Prestige Master ranks continue to Level 1,000 with rewards every 5–10 levels (to 99) and every 25 after that. Weapon Prestige is separate and optional: entering it resets that one weapon's level and relocks its attachments in exchange for exclusive camos.

What is the max level in MW4 multiplayer?Verified

55 military levels at launch (Private I through Commander), each granting unlocks — after that come 10 Prestige levels, then Prestige Master levels up to 1,000. DMZ has its own separate 70-level track: DMZ XP also feeds your 1–55 player level, but multiplayer XP does not feed DMZ levels. A pre-launch claim that Season 1 raises the cap to 60 does not appear on official pages; the documented system is 55 + Prestige + Prestige Master to 1,000.

Do my old Call of Duty items, Battle Pass progress or MW4 beta progress carry over?Partly verified

Split answer. Beta: progression (levels, weapon and streak unlocks) resets at launch — but the beta bonus content tied to your Activision account carries, and Activision warns you lose it if you switch to a different account than the one you played the beta on. Older titles: nothing confirms items or Battle Pass progress moving into MW4 — what's confirmed instead is the 10% Vault loyalty discount for owners of recent Call of Duty titles, plus named preorder items Activision explicitly shares across Black Ops 7, Warzone and MW4. Check your in-game armory and Activision account inventory at launch for the definitive list.

Is there a verified MW4 meta yet?Unconfirmed

No — and any tier list published before October 23, 2026 cannot come from real matches. What is reliable today is the confirmed system layer: 33 launch weapons, shared attachment unlocks, Apex Attachments, the 18-perk Pick-3 pool and 17 killstreaks (all documented on this site with sources). Once live matches start, tier claims should come with match data; until then, build around engagement range and mode, not around someone's guess.

What FOV should I use in MW4?Partly verified

Experiment — MW4 changes the FOV tradeoff. Activision confirmed a PC-only, lens-based FOV rework designed to widen awareness without making targets feel smaller, so old "wider = smaller targets" advice only partially applies. The specific slider ranges that circulated before launch (80–120) are not on official pages we can verify. Practical starting point: PC players, push FOV up until it hurts target identification, then step back; console slider availability is unconfirmed — check your settings menu.
